- Emotional and psychological comfort: Mastectomy can be an effective treatment to improve patients' psychological and/or social functioning by allowing them to align their physical features with their inner sense of identity.
- Avoid depression: Some trans men may experience depression or feel trapped within their biological body. Undergoing a mastectomy can help patients embrace their true gender identity and decrease stress and depression.
What are the types of transgender mastectomy?
There are 4 alternatives that from our Center and by the hand of our specialist, the Dr. Daniel J. Rodríguez Morales de los Ríos, We offer our patients:
- Areolar: An incision is made in the lower part of the areola and breast tissue is removed by direct excision. Typically, the areola is not resized with this technique and excess skin cannot be removed.
- Periareolar: The periareolar technique involves two concentric circular incisions around the areolas. The skin between the incisions is removed, and the breast tissue is excised through an opening between the circles. You can usually resize your areola with this method.
- Double incision: An incision is made along the chest crease and a second incision is made higher up. Next, breast tissue and excess skin are removed, and the skin on the upper chest is pulled down. After the incision is closed, the nipples and areolas are reattached.
- Liposuction: Liposuction can be performed in conjunction with these procedures to remove excess fat and improve overall results for optimal chest contouring.
What is transgender mastectomy recovery like?
After surgery, drainage tubes are usually left in for about a week to collect blood and other body fluids.
Similarly, our specialist recommends a compression garment for several months to reduce swelling and maintain the contours of the new chest. Some patients can return to work in two to three weeks, but strenuous activity is not allowed for two months after surgery.
