Lipedema is an underdiagnosed disease of fat (adipose) cells.
As the disease progresses, lipedema deposits abnormal amounts of fat on the lower half of the body, resulting in "spine-shaped" legs and/or cuffs of fat around the ankle. Meanwhile, the torso remains disproportionately smaller. In the later stages of lipedema, fatty deposits may appear on the buttocks, torso, and upper arms.
How to identify Lipedema?
If you have one or more of these common symptoms, you could have lipedema:
- Large tube-shaped legs.
- Accumulations of fat around the ankles.
- The upper body is much smaller than the lower body.
- Swollen legs that hurt easily.
- Legs that hurt when touched.
- Bulging tissue that looks like cellulite.
- Excess tissue accumulated around the knees and on the inner part of the thighs.
- The size of fat is not reduced by diet or exercise.
- Changes in the skin
What are the causes of Lipedema?
Although the disease was first identified in the 1940s, the exact cause is still under study. What we do know is that lipedema often begins with hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause. Heredity can play an important role.
Treatment of Lipedema with Water Jet Assisted Liposuction (WAL)
Water Jet Assisted Liposuction (WAL) is a highly specialized technique used in the treatment of lipedema. Unlike conventional liposuction methods, during the WAL procedure, fat is gently dislodged from the tissue structure using a flat, fan-shaped jet of water and then suctioned out. The surrounding lymphatics, connective tissue, nerves and blood vessels remain much less traumatized, which is extremely important in the treatment of lipedema.
The main goal of the WAL procedure is to relieve pain, increase mobility, and prevent the progression of lipedema, which can severely limit the patient's activities of daily living. Experts agree that WAL is not a cosmetic procedure for patients with lipedema, but is absolutely medically necessary. Each patient is unique; therefore, treatment results may vary.

What are the benefits of Waterjet Assisted Liposuction (WAL) Lipedema treatment?
- Fast healing and recovery of wounds.
- Local anesthesia is used putting less stress on the lymphatic system.
- Compression garments may only be needed for a few weeks in early-stage cases. More advanced cases require prolonged use of compression.
- Less pain and discomfort.
- Little or no damage to surrounding tissues.
- Reduced risk of complications compared to other forms of liposuction.
Surgical treatment of lipedema is best accomplished with water jet-assisted liposuction (WAL), a lymph-sparing liposuction performed under local (not general) tumescent anesthesia. Research shows that lymph-sparing liposuction produces good long-term results in reducing lipedema pain and stopping lipedema progression. You want to know more? Contact us!
